Call for entries – Stories

PH-21-gallery-imagePhotographs are often associated with the concept of freezing time. Nevertheless, photography has always been a sensitive storytelling medium as well. Looking at a photograph may allow for understanding much about the past leading up to the captured moment; it may also enable the viewer to imagine the possible futures evolving from the frozen record of the here and now. Photographers portraying people, objects, and places can tell us inspiring stories, provided that we take the time to study and interpret the photographs. A narrative told with a single image is a most exciting challenge for the photographer
and the viewer alike, and hopefully we appreciate these works with the care and curiosity they deserve.

PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for a group exhibition themed Stories. We are looking for submissions from all photographers who think that their submitted images tell us a story, and who would like to share their work with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery. The theme is broadly construed; it may be expressed visually on personal or social levels, literally or in abstract, symbolic ways. Stories can be told about persons, communities, objects, and places as well. Indeed, we are interested in all possible creative photographic interpretations of the theme.

Eligibility Worldwide, 18+

Entry Fee
The entry fee is €10.00 for the first 3 images, €15.00 for 5 images, €20.00 for 7 images, €25.00 for 10 images, and €30.00 for 15 images.

One juror’s choice and up to three honourable mentions will be selected and announced. The juror’s choice receives three free
entries for any upcoming themed group exhibition calls at PH21 Gallery. (Each free entry includes up to 15 images.) The webpage and the print catalogue of the exhibition will include a juror’s review; it provides a detailed review of the juror’s choice, shorter evaluations of the honourable mentions, and a one-sentence highlight of some of the other photographs included in the exhibition. (Please visit the pages of our recent exhibitions for examples.)

Limit of Entry 15 images

All copyrights and ownership of the works are retained by the photographer.

Usage of Entry
By entering, entrants automatically accept the conditions of the competition; they grant PH21 Gallery nonexclusive right to use and reproduce submitted photographs (with the name of the photographer and the title of the work indicated) for promotional (e.g.: website of the Gallery, catalogue) and exhibition purposes. No royalties or compensation will be paid for these purposes.

Mixed Media Mash Up

Call-EntriesCreating art isn’t always done by conventional means nor with conventional materials. The challenge becomes strategizing and synthesizing the disorder that is unavoidable when combining varying mediums. In this call for entries we want to see your mixed media artworks.

Calls are open to all local, domestic, national and international professional and amateur artists. All art mediums will be considered in this call for submissions, from photography, wall sculpture, fabric, mixed media, all paintings and drawings including, oil, acrylic, pastels, ink, graphite, etc. Sizes up to 12 feet are acceptable. Work must be able to be hung on a wall to be considered for the live exhibition. Freestanding 3D artworks will be displayed online only. We are now accepting video and poetry entries for online shows.
Accepted entries for this online exhibition will be judged again in the coming months for a collective live exhibition at our Los Angeles gallery. The artists will be asked if they wish to submit their artwork for the collective exhibition, which is not a requirement to being a part of the online exhibition.
DEADLINE FOR THIS CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Deadline September 22, 2014 Cost: $35 for 3 entries, $5 for additional entries. All submissions must represent the actual artwork as closely as possible. If your work is misrepresented in any way– meaning the picture diverges greatly from what the work actually looks like in color, shape, or dimensions etc., we reserve the right to refuse to hang the artwork if it should be chosen for a live show.

Eligibility Open to all artists internationally. To amateurs and professionals alike.

Win $13000 in Photography Contest

character-bannerFor centuries, portraits and stories that reveal our humanity have been a source of fascination for artists working in all forms of media – especially photography, video and writing. These visual and written stories can depict the inner spirit revealed in a face, the human condition found in an interaction, a short cinematic profile that reveals the essence of someone’s life, or a story that brings a fictional or historical persona to life. No matter what the genre, success is often found in the interaction between the maker and the subject.

This contest is an opportunity for our international community of photographers, filmmakers and writers of all ages to present their representations of Character: Portraits and Stories That Reveal the Human Condition to a distinguished panel of judges.
