Participate in the Visibile White Photo Contest

contest-2-logo-imageFamilydom is an open call for photographic projects curated by Francesca Fabiani and Paul di Felice, which explores the varied and fragmented experiences we have in relation to the family.

Familydom is this year’s chosen theme for the 4th edition of Visible White Photo Prize. Selections of finalist projects by Peggy Sue Amison, Christian Gattinoni, Elisa Medde. 4,000 € prizes and exhibition at Fondazione Studio Marangoni. Deadline is 28 February 2015. Enter your project from your account in Celeste.

Eligibility: Worldwide

Entry Fee: 70 €

Theme

“Since Edward Steichen’s exhibition The Family of Man in 1955, the notion of ‘family’ has changed radically. The images Steichen chose carried the values of a closed and human rural community, far away from today’s globalized ethic and aesthetic visions. In the 1980s and 1990s the humanist idea of the family was being replaced by a varied and fragmented conception of representing the world through many postmodern exhibitions. The advent of digital technology, the placing on the market of easy-to-use devices such as smartphones and tablets, combined with the proliferation of social networks, have literally transformed ways of communication, experience of reality, self-representation and representation of individuals and communities.
The home environment and the ‘family’ are not exempt from these changes, rather, in virtue of the change in their social significance, they have assimilated these new ways of communicating and of generating new iconography. In the context of post-human society, of genetic manipulation and cyber-culture, many photographs today question the status of the body, of the individual and the group, by reinterpreting the different genres and human themes in an experimental photographic manner.
In the light of these revolutions, the proposed theme ‘Familydom’ after last year’s more ‘self’-oriented ‘You See Me’, aims to investigate the ‘social’ impact of photography and the crucial role it assumes in the ‘certification’ of identity and understanding (or compromise?) of the real in relation to virtual, fictional and imaginary family issues.”

FREEDOM TO LOVE – Photography Award 2014 – terms and conditions HERE
Participants worldwide are invited to submit entries that explore the following statment:

“No one should be afraid to walk down the street holding hands with the person they love” (Barack Obama 2012)
Most western societies enshrine in their constitution the rights of freedom and equality. Our leaders maintain we are free to live our lives, make our own decisions. Yet intolerance, prejudice, injustice and even brutality is suffered by individuals simply following their heart and attempting to love another person. Race, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender-identity still act as silent but powerful social dividers of the modern era.

Challenging traditional belief systems can result in being ostracised, jailed or in some cases, death. According to the Crime Survey for England and Wales there are an estimated 278,000 hate crimes committed on average every year. People of all persuasions are often forced to leave their home and all that they know to be with the person they love. History is rife with famous examples, including forbidden love at its finest: Romeo and Juliet.

FREEDOM TO LOVE aims to raise awareness on the difficulties many people endure every day worldwide, as they try to express the most powerful and constructive human quality – love.

The judges are looking for photographs that testify that love is universal. Participants are invited to submit images of love, communion and friendship that cross established social boundaries, be they racial, religious, gender, age, or any other identifiable boundary.
